Vingroup’s Pham Nhat Vuong to receive PropertyGuru Vietnam Property Awards’ Real Estate Personality of the Year title

Vietnam’s most affluent billionaire to be honoured for rich legacy of transforming the built environment, from coast to skyscraper summit

Pham Nhat Vuong, the founder and chairman of Vingroup, will receive the honour of Real Estate Personality of the Year in tonight’s celebration of the 6th Annual PropertyGuru Vietnam Property Awards at the InterContinental Saigon in Ho Chi Minh City.

The award will be presented to Vuong in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the Vietnamese real estate industry, as determined by the editors of PropertyGuru Property Report Magazine. It is the only accolade not decided by the independent team of judges who chose this year’s batch of winners and Highly Commended awardees.

Vuong is the first and most affluent billionaire in Vietnam. After spinning gold out of an instant-noodle business in Europe, the Hanoi-born business magnate went on to establish one of Vietnam’s biggest property developers and diversify it into the country’s largest private conglomerate, Vingroup.

With interests ranging from automobiles to smart devices, healthcare to education, sports to hospitality, Vingroup is firmly entrenched in Vietnam’s economic growth and development.

Through Vinhomes, the industry-leading residential development arm of Vingroup, Vuong masterminded the building of Landmark 81, a high-end, mixed-use skyscraper in Ho Chi Minh City. The tallest building in the country, Landmark 81 was completed in 2018 at a height of more than 469m (1,540 ft). It rises above Vinhomes Central Park, a nearly 44-hectare new urban area alongside the Saigon River.

Vuong also trailblazed some of the country’s most iconic luxury resorts. Following his success in Europe, he showed incredible foresight by returning to his homeland and altering its abundance of unspoiled, deserted islands into luxurious resort destinations and tourist hubs. This led to the creation of Vinpearl, a homegrown operator and developer of five-star resorts and hotels.

Vuong also leaves a rich legacy of retail centres through Vingroup’s retail development arm Vincom Retail. With brands such as Vincom Mega Mall, Vincom Center, Vincom Plaza and Vincom+, Vincom Retail operates nearly 70 shopping malls in almost 40 provinces across Vietnam.

An alumnus of the Russian State Geological Prospecting University, Vuong has truly come a long way from his humble roots producing and selling instant noodles in Ukraine in the 1990s – the most successful in a long line of entrepreneurial attempts in eastern Europe. By the turn of the millennium, his instant-noodle business had grown into a household name, Mivina.

A man with an eye for charitable giving and social entrepreneurship, Vuong is giving back his fortune during a time of need. Recently, Vingroup retooled some of its factories to produce international-standard ventilators and distribute and donate them not only in Vietnam but also in Singapore, Russia and Ukraine.

He once said: “Làm gì cũng phải đam mê, nghiêm túc với công việc, học hỏi liên tục cả đối thủ.” (Whatever you do, you must be passionate, serious about your work, and continuously learn from your opponent.)
