Pengerang to become Malaysia’s technology hub in five years’ time
As part of the planned Malaysia Smart City Framework
Housing and local government minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said that they will transform Pengerang, a municipal area in southeast Johor, into a smart city within the next five years, reported The Edge Markets.
The smart city zone, which should abide by the Malaysia Smart City Framework launched in September 2019, would be built on a 121-hectare land in the south of the district.
Among the pioneer cities listed to accomplish the Malaysia Smart City Framework were Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Keda, Johor Bahru, Kulim, and Kuching. Unlike Pengerang, the implementation for these other cities would come into stages because of the existing infrastructures, such as road and traffic light systems.

“Compared to other cities, Pengerang was drafted through strategic planning as a new development area towards becoming a smart city beginning with the provision of infrastructure. Work on the 21 ha area was extensively planned,” clarified Zuraida.
During the launch of the Malaysia Smart City Framework, prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that they envision sustainable technology to be integrated into the city services.
Through this approach, residents can benefit from improved public safety and quality of life, such as smart waste management, waste treatment, energy-efficient buildings, efficient public transportation systems, 5G connections, and cashless communities.
