Final cadre of nominees for 2019 PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards (Sri Lanka) mirrors resilient market

BANGKOK — 8 October 2019

The finest projects and developers in Sri Lanka have been pared down to a chosen few for the third edition of the annual PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards (Sri Lanka) competition, reflecting the resilience of the island nation’s property market.

Shortlisted nominees from South Asia’s Emerald Isle will be decorated at an exclusive black-tie gala dinner on Friday, 22 November, at The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok in Thailand. The ceremony will be held in tandem with the 14th Annual PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards Grand Final presentation.

Last year’s Best Developer Prime Group returns with multiple nominations. The One Transworks Square (Pvt) Ltd is in the sole running for Best Mixed Use Development for The One, which, upon completion, will become one of the tallest buildings in South Asia.

The announcement of finalists from Sri Lanka is a defiant about-face for a market that overcame extraordinary headwinds in 2019.

Nirmal de Silva, CEO of Paramount Realty and returning chairperson of this year’s panel of judges, said: “The Sri Lankan property market has been slowly moving forward in the aftermath of the recent incidents this year. It is anticipated that we would not see significant changes in the market until the elections are over at the end of the year.

“However, the developers and investors have definitely shown resilience and commitment over the past few months which is wonderful to see and a huge positive aspect as well. The Sri Lankan real estate segment will bounce back soon, and there is no doubt about that.”

De Silva heads a central panel of judges consisting of Emeritus Prof. Chitra Weddikkara, managing director of QServe Pte Ltd; Nandike D. Samaranayake, chartered architect, AIA (SL); Natalie Pendigrast, founder and director of Pendi Pvt Ltd; Nilesh de Silva, chartered architect and director of Kahawita De Silva & Associates Pvt Ltd (KDS); Roshan Madawela, founding director and CEO of Real-Estate Intelligence Unit (RIU); Stephanie Balendra, director of Homes N Spaces Lanka Properties (Pvt) Ltd; and William Vincent Asoka Tilakawardane, fellow of the Institute of Project Managers (Sri Lanka).

BDO returns this year as official supervisor of the awards. BDO Sri Lanka & Maldives managing partner Sujeewa Rajapakse, along with partner Sasanka Rathnaweera, helped oversee the judging process and continued the award series’ track record of credibility and objectivity.

Sri Lanka’s most awaited real estate event of the year has garnered the support of gold sponsor and official airline partner Thai Airways.
