Recognising his exceptional leadership and the groundbreaking success of Merdeka 118, Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz is shaping the future of Malaysia’s urban development
PropertyGuru Asia Awards Malaysia in partnership with iProperty Malaysia proudly announces that Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz Tengku Mahmud, CEO of PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn. Berhad, will be named the 2024 Malaysia Real Estate Personality of the Year. This prestigious accolade recognises Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz’s exceptional leadership and visionary contributions to Malaysia’s real estate sector, particularly through the development of the iconic Merdeka 118 precinct project.
Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz has been leading PNB Merdeka Ventures since April 2010, where he has overseen the development of Merdeka 118—a remarkable 118-storey tower that stands as a testament to architectural excellence in Malaysia. This landmark project, which includes an observation deck, a hotel, a retail mall, and residential towers, contributes significantly to the urban landscape of Kuala Lumpur. Under his guidance, Merdeka 118 has become a symbol of innovation, heritage, and progress in the region.
Before his current role, Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz served as the Head of Property Development at Sime Darby Property Berhad, where he was responsible for property development operations as well as hospitality, leisure, and asset management within the property division. He also held the position of Head of Property and CEO at Guthrie Property Development Holding Berhad, driving major property initiatives from 2005 to 2007. His extensive experience in leadership roles has consistently showcased his ability to deliver impactful and transformative projects.
A strong advocate for sustainability, Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz has embedded ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives into the core of the Merdeka 118 project. This development incorporates energy-efficient lighting, rainwater harvesting, solar-powered water heating, and provisions for green transportation such as bicycle racks and green vehicle parking. The tower is Platinum LEED certified and is targeting additional Platinum certifications from GreenRE and GBI, demonstrating Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz’s commitment to minimising environmental impact while enhancing urban living.
The social aspect of the Merdeka 118 precinct is equally commendable. The development enhances public spaces, supports community programmes, and provides grants for local businesses, ensuring that the benefits of growth are felt by the entire community. Governance initiatives include fostering a healthy workplace environment aligned with WELL certification standards, supporting hybrid work models, and leveraging modern technology—all of which highlight Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz’s focus on creating productive and sustainable working environments.
Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz is also an influential member of various respected institutions, including the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, and the Malaysian Institute of Management. His extensive contributions and reputation as a leader underscore his standing as a key figure in Malaysia’s property industry.
Dato’ Tengku Ab. Aziz Tengku Mahmud’s recognition as the 2024 Malaysia Real Estate Personality of the Year reflects his transformative vision for the industry, his dedication to sustainable development, and his efforts to create vibrant, inclusive urban spaces.
