Ar. (Dr.) Serina Hijjas is one of Malaysia’s earliest and most influential advocates for
sustainable design, leading the transition from energy efficiency to holistic sustainability
and zero-carbon strategies. As Principal Director at HIJJAS Kasturi Associates, she is
widely recognized for shaping Malaysia’s architectural landscape through bold,
responsive, and energy-conscious designs.
Her work spans major national projects, including the Putrajaya Capital Administrative
Center Masterplan, the 3km Central Boulevard Design, and the Waterfront Masterplan,
along with numerous landmark buildings in Putrajaya. Under her leadership, HIJJAS has
collaborated with world-renowned BIG Architects on the award-winning Penang South
Islands Masterplan and is currently engaged in a transformative masterplan for Johor
Bahru.
Serina also led the design of the Malaysia Pavilion at Dubai EXPO, the first Net Zero
Carbon Pavilion at the World EXPO event. Inspired by Malaysia’s rainforest and
traditional stilt architecture, the pavilion exemplifies synergy with nature and minimal
environmental impact, setting a benchmark for sustainable development by addressing
both embodied and operational carbon.
Beyond her architectural practice, Serina is a prominent sustainability advocate. She
serves as President of the Malaysia Green Building Council, Council Member of Climate
Governance Malaysia, and contributes as Past Chair and Technical Committee Member
of the Green Building Index, driving initiatives that promote sustainable cities and
buildings nationwide.
