Beijing Golden Resources Shopping Center is a retail development along West Fourth Ring Road in Beijing. Widely known as \u201cThe Big Mall\u201d, it is one of the world\u2019s largest single commercial buildings, covering 18.2 hectares beside the Kunyu River with a total floor area of 615,000 sqm.<\/p>\n
Although it has enjoyed enduring popularity and high footfall since opening in 2004, the retail landmark required a comprehensive upgrade to renew its identity, performance, and long-term relevance.<\/p>\n
Benoy was commissioned to deliver a holistic architectural and interior transformation for the retail hub. The team distilled the essence of the site and reinterpreted traditional architectural language through contemporary forms.<\/p>\n
As a result, traditional textures are paired with flowing, wave-like geometries to retain collective memory while establishing a renewed urban identity. Sustainability is embedded throughout the design via locally sourced, recyclable fa\u00e7ade materials and carbon footprint tracking. Passive and active strategies were also implemented, including the installation of rooftop photovoltaic panels and fa\u00e7ade sun-shading, as well as natural ventilation.<\/p>\n
Benoy\u2019s upgrade to the shopping mall repositions it as a future-ready urban landmark, honouring its historical presence while improving environmental performance and spatial experience. It ensures long-term resilience and continued relevance within Beijing\u2019s evolving retail and urban landscape.<\/p>\n
The development was Highly Commended for Best Retail Interior Design (Mainland China) at the 12th PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau).<\/p>\n
