Hong Kong Police Association and Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants’ Association have partnered with Chinese property developer Agile Group to build a Hong Kong-themed retirement community in the Southern part of China, reported Channel News Asia.

Based on the information posted on their website, the association started planning since the end of 2018, but the announcement only surfaced because of the four months of sometimes violent rallies, most of which were directed at the police.

Protesters have thrown petrol bombs and other objects at the police, who have reacted by hurling tear gas, shooting rubber bullets, and blasting water cannons.

The altercations have led to two civilians being shot and wounded, causing most demonstrators to accuse the police of using excessive force. But despite the growing violence, the police retorts that they have shown restraint.

Earlier this week, a Hong Kong court passed a mandate to prevent demonstrators from damaging or blocking areas used to house the disciplined services, including the police force.

“Hong Kong City” will be built in Zhaoqing, Guangdong, one and a half hours away from Hong Kong via high-speed rail. The first phase of the project is planned to be completed by the end of next year.

The association said that “(the city) aims to provide a high-quality life with low cost,” adding that they will try to convince Agile to give their members a good price.

Kong Wing-cheung, acting chief superintendent of the Police Public Relations Branch, said that the developer is planning to sell the units in groups to provide discounts.

According to Agile, the community will feature Hong Kong culture in a diverse development project ideal for post-retirement living, clarifying that it would accommodate all walks of life, not just the police force.
