Pomeroy Academy introduces new scholarship programme focused on sustainability

The Interdisciplinary Design For the Built Environment Master’s degree was designed for industry professionals who are looking to “push the boundaries of sustainable design and research” 

On Friday, Pomeroy Academy announced that they are calling for applicants for a new scholarship programme at The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership (CISL), which aims to support the next generation of Southeast Asia’s sustainability leaders.

The Pomeroy Academy Scholarship for Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment is open to Southeast Asia professionals looking to enrol at Cambridge University’s prestigious Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment (IDBE) Master’s degree. The scholarship will support one student per year from the Southeast Asia region who can demonstrate their interest in, and commitment to, the design and development of sustainable built environments. Deadline for applications is on 15 June 2020.

According to Pomeroy Academy, the Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment (IDBE) course “offers an interdisciplinary approach to learning for built environment professionals, structured around emerging trends, opportunities and challenges with the built environment, covering sustainability and resilience, health and well-being, energy, efficiency, conservation, heritage, stakeholder engagement, politics and regulation.”

The executive programme comes at a time when businesses are obligated to re-asses their strategies and employees are potentially having to re-think their career options.

Seeing the impact of the pandemic across the region, Prof. Jason Pomeroy, the founding principal of Pomeroy Studio and Pomeroy Academy, and the creator of the scholarship said: “The pandemic has undoubtedly caused much pain and suffering both physiologically, psychologically and economically. However, with record numbers of employees being furloughed or made redundant, the period also provides an opportunity to re-evaluate career paths or enhance knowledge.”

He noticed that part-time executive programmes are an increasingly valuable component to a university’s arsenal of courses, and usually combines campus and home study. They can enable professionals to enhance their knowledge, while juggling their day-to-day work and home life.

“The Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment Master’s degree at Cambridge University is one such example that trains future leaders for the complexities of a constantly changing and challenging urban habitat.”

The degree is crucial for the region since Southeast Asia is forecasted to grow rapidly within the next 30 years and it is likely to be exposed to the consequences of climate change.

“The region needs more built environment professionals with the knowledge and networks to drive change and ensure resilient future-proofed built environments,” added Dr. Kayla Friedman, IDBE Course Director.
