In India,<\/span>\u00a0the demand for data centres<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>grew\u00a0<\/span>substantially in the midst of people working from home due to the pandemic<\/span>, reported\u00a0<\/span>Bloomberg Quint<\/span><\/a>, citing a report from\u00a0Anarock\u00a0Research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the lockdown period, the capacity usage for data centres rose by 25 to 35 percent<\/span> as businesses started to reconstruct their digital infrastructure to keep up with new work arrangements. Anarock predicted<\/span>\u00a0that this demand will thrust the growth of data centres as a real estate asset.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shard\u00a0<\/span>Sanghi<\/span>, the chief executive officer of global data centres and cloud infrastructure (India) at NTT Ltd., said that data centres are now considered as an essential service. H<\/span>e explained that cloud usage has\u00a0<\/span>magnified because of e-commerce, schools and streaming services platform like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to have more physical servers to be able to support demand from these places. So absolutely it is a factor in the growth in data centres,\u201d added\u00a0S<\/span>anghi<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He also revealed that d<\/span>evelopers are already more comfortable with the notion of\u00a0<\/span>constructing their own data centres, which will house internet servers and other data applications<\/span>. The outbreak will further support the emerging asset class,\u00a0<\/span>particularly nowadays when commercial property owners are directly feeling the impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover,\u00a0<\/span>Sanghi<\/span>\u00a0said that the Data Protection and Privacy Bill, as well as\u00a0<\/span>multinational businesses <\/span>opening up<\/span>\u00a0shop in India have also driven the demand.\u00a0\u201cIf they have sensitive and critical data, it has to be hosted and processed in India itself.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the next two to three years, he projected that India\u00a0<\/span>will<\/span>\u00a0have an additiona<\/span>l<\/span>\u00a010 million square feet\u00a0<\/span>of data centre space. So far, the country documented about 7.5 million sq<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ft. space in the top eight cities, primarily led by Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWork-from-home compulsions, online education, video-based medical consultations, a huge increase in e-commerce and business-related video conferencing and webinars are increasing the demand for data centres,\u201d said the managing director and chief executive officer at\u00a0Anarock\u00a0Capital Shobhit Agarwal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
