The urban cities that you know now wouldn\u2019t be the same without the colossal skyscrapers<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>compelling ar<\/span>chitecture<\/span>s and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>impressive landmarks<\/span>. These structures\u00a0<\/span>symbolize<\/span>\u00a0the success of a\u00a0<\/span>neighbourhood<\/span>, where everything that you need\u00a0<\/span>—\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>your workplace to\u00a0<\/span>entertainment venues<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>life-sustaining\u00a0<\/span>establishments<\/span> such as\u00a0<\/span>hospitals<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and grocery\u00a0<\/span>stores<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>—<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all within a short distance from your own home.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span>ith the predicted influx of people moving to cities in the\u00a0<\/span>coming years,<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>real estate industry will have to build more to\u00a0<\/span>accommodate\u00a0<\/span>the needs of th<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>growing population<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>But in order to meet such needs,\u00a0<\/span>the environment would have to\u00a0<\/span>suffer<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from the noise and dust pollution,<\/span> widely-used materials during construction like steel <\/span>and concrete<\/span>\u00a0generate\u00a010 percent of the global annual greenhouse gases when they are being manufactured.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Since there are only a few known solutions to produce these without\u00a0<\/span>releasing carbon dioxide,\u00a0<\/span>expert\u00a0<\/span>panellists<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span>t the Exploring Efficient Design webinar discussed alternative green-friendly <\/span>materials\u00a0<\/span>that can<\/span> be used.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the luminaries were Ron Bakker, the founding partner <\/span>of London-based<\/span>\u00a0PLP Architecture,\u00a0<\/span>who\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>hared\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0his firm ha<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0been working with the University of Cambridge<\/span>, along with materials engineers, structural engineers and chemists to\u00a0<\/span>pursu<\/span>e<\/span> the use of wood as a sustainable material <\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>develop high-rise buildings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The challenges faced<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ron said that they have conducted several study projects with real clients to\u00a0determine\u00a0<\/span>whether the idea is conceivable and financially practical. He admitted th<\/span>e difficulties that they have faced since this material has commonly only been used to build two to three-floor sheds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Their concept to develop a high-rise building out of wood had to go through a number of issues like the structural technologies of fixings, bioengineering, acoustics and material science.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, they had to consider the integrity and durability of wood.\u00a0<\/span>He explained that since most of the engineered wood used by the construction industry is softwood. It grows quickly, it is inexpensive and it can easily be reass<\/span>embled into elements that the industry already comprehends structurally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem is, softwood needs to be kept inside as it doesn\u2019t do well in rain, <\/span>gets damaged by ultraviolet rays and bugs love to eat it. The solution is to protect the timber behind glass or inside a building so there wouldn\u2019t be an<\/span>y limit to its life. He also argued that the structure that holds the climbing of the dome in St. Paul\u2019s Cathedral<\/span> is made of local oakwood, is several hundred years old and hasn’t had any issues similar to other materials used in the project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The future\u00a0is timber<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the course of four years, they eventually found\u00a0that “Yes, you can build buildings of about 300\u00a0metres\u00a0out of wood and\u00a0that will be incredibly sustainable. It would make it very easy for projects to be net carbon negative rather than adding to the problem,\u201d revealed Ron.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if you look at timber as something that grows\u00a0in a farm, then it’s a material that works beautifully,\u201d he added.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from the environmental benefit, wood has been aesthetically\u00a0associated with a\u00a0feeling of warmth. Ron even said that there are plenty of studies depicting its health benefits\u00a0to various users, such as better concentration for kids at school and positive social interactions at home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span><\/i>n award-wining<\/span><\/i>\u00a0hybrid structure<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>the center of\u00a0<\/span>Rotterdam,\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>Netherlands, PLP Architecture<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>successfully\u00a0<\/span>developed an award-wining mixed-use project<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>right next to a train station.\u00a0<\/span>The said development comes with\u00a0<\/span>residences<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>offices, an event space for jazz music and Ted talks, several restaurants and bars and some retail shops at the base<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Ron, they had to figure out which material works best for the project and its location. Since it is\u00a0<\/span>near a station, they decided to use concrete as it will be able to absorb the noise and vibration from the railway.\u00a0<\/span>As for the apartments, they wanted to incorporate timber as its structure is ideal for\u00a0<\/span>the small spaces and areas where the users are more in touch with the material.<\/span> To ensure the security and safety of future users, <\/span>they spoke with the fire department and mad<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>sure that the building itself is compliant\u00a0<\/span>to all the regulations<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
