ESG<\/span>, which stands for\u00a0<\/span>Environmental, Social and<\/span> Governance<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0defined by\u00a0<\/span>Market Business News<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>“a subset of non-financial performance indicators\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>include ethical, sustainable and corporate government issues<\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This means that b<\/span>usinesses\u00a0<\/span>in compliance<\/span> with these ESG principles<\/span>\u00a0ensure<\/span> that they properly manage their <\/span>people<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>operate in an ethical manner<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0reduce their carbon footprint<\/span>\u00a0— and these are the\u00a0real estate developers that we want to\u00a0<\/span>grant<\/span>\u00a0this new award<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>However<\/span>, this is not the first time that we will honour developers who practice ESG.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0independent judging panels for the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards have been recogni<\/span>s<\/span>ing developers for their sustainable projects and\u00a0ESG-related\u00a0activities for several year<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0through awards<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0such as\u00a0Best Green Development and Special Recognition in CSR<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>explained\u00a0<\/span>Jules Kay, managing director of PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The introduction of t<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>new<\/span>\u00a0Special Recognition in<\/span>\u00a0ESG award is support<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0by the industry<\/span>, including\u00a0<\/span>Baan Dek Foundation<\/span>\u00a0(BDF)<\/span>\u00a0whose primary mission is to give all vulnerable children access to education, health and safety services<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover<\/span>, they have been working with real estate development firms and construction companies to raise awareness on the importance of ESG for over eight years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nicola C<\/span>rosta, founder of Baan Dek Foundation, said that they have been\u00a0<\/span>providing industry leaders with \u201cthe information (including incentives), actionable recommendations and ready-to-use tools needed to support the sector.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked why is it so crucial for the real estate industry to establish ESG <\/span>practices<\/span>, he had this to say:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cProperty developers have a visible role in shaping our cities and<\/span>\u00a0societies. Construction work can affect communities positively or negatively both in terms of environmental and social impact.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Property\u00a0<\/span>d<\/span>evelopers and construction companies need to take responsibility in a context of progressively more educated and socially conscious customers\u00a0and general\u00a0public.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>They have the opportunity to act directly on social and environmental issues by adhering to good practices themselves and exerting a positive influence on the practices of contractors.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During these unprecedented times,<\/span>\u00a0when\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>entire\u00a0<\/span>country is struggling\u00a0<\/span>to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he said that<\/span>\u00a0developers who practice ESG principles have already designated funds to provide protective healthcare equipment not only in worksites, but also in worker camps.<\/span>
