From the Asian influenza 60 years ago to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) 17 years <\/span>later<\/span>\u00a0to the COVID-19\u00a0<\/span>outbreak today<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0China\u00a0<\/span>seems\u00a0<\/span>to be the breeding ground for deadly pandemics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Studies reveal that the<\/span>\u00a0current\u00a0<\/span>public health crisis<\/span>, which has already taken the lives of 88,446 individuals across the globe,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>originated in a wet market selling live exotic animals <\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>Wuhan, China<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Fo<\/span>r<\/span> centuries, locals believed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that consuming wildlife<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>provide<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>special\u00a0<\/span>health benefits, such as snake soup to treat illnesses, sheep testicles to increase virility, tiger bones to build stronger bones and muscles, and much more<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Though this belief has been debunked by Chinese scientists themselves, it is already deeply rooted in the local culture, which is what enabled the <\/span>coronavirus, a type of zoonotic disease, to spread from animals to humans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>this\u00a0<\/span>is just<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a sliver<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of the\u00a0<\/span>full scope of the<\/span> problem that is also affecting other urban cities in Asia, not just China<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to chief of wildlife at the United Nations Environment\u00a0Programme (UNEP) Doreen Robinson, “diseases passed from animals to humans are on the rise, as the world continues to see unprecedented destruction of wild habitats by human activity.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Humans and nature are part of one connected system, and we need to understand how it works so that we don’t push things too far and face increasingly negative consequences,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A 2016 UNEP report revealed that the growing population and the impact of climate change has demanded so much from cities. <\/span>U<\/span>rbanisation<\/span>, deforestation, agriculture — including more intense cultivation — and resource extraction has allowed coronaviruses to <\/span>come into cont<\/span>ac<\/span>t with<\/span>\u00a0people from animals, when these two should have never interacted in the first place.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With\u00a0<\/span>urbanisation<\/span>\u00a0also comes another factor that makes coronaviruses more lethal than it already\u00a0<\/span>is:<\/span>\u00a0air pollution.\u00a0<\/span>People living in these\u00a0<\/span>dense<\/span>, polluted<\/span>\u00a0cities\u00a0<\/span>are at risk of having <\/span>lung and heart damage that could worsen if infected by the virus. Did you know that dirty air alone has caused at<\/span>\u00a0least eight million\u00a0<\/span>premature\u00a0<\/span>deaths per year?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As local governments implement containing measures, such as business closures and community quarantines, people <\/span>have been forced to stay inside their homes<\/span>. However, most of them are unaware that the air they breathe indoors is five <\/span>times worse than the outdoors<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith the quarantine and lockdown, everybody is asked to stay indoors. This means that there would be more pollution created indoors because of human activity<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0explained\u00a0<\/span>CEO and co-founder of\u00a0<\/span>uHoo<\/span>\u00a0Dustin Onghanseng.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The constant use of air conditioners also <\/span>mean<\/span>\u00a0that you\u2019re breathing in stale and\u00a0<\/span>recycled\u00a0air<\/span> because there is no ventilation and no fresh oxygen coming in from outdoors. Air conditioners also dry up the air, causing you to feel more dehydrated (which lowers your immune system) if you don\u2019t take enough fluids.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For now, families can rely on air quality devices to breathe healthy air indoors. But in the long run, urban planning can not only prevent the emergence o<\/span>f future pandemics, it can also address other\u00a0<\/span>city\u00a0<\/span>problems, such as air pollution and traffic congestion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Urban planners believe that the COVID-19 outbreak will encourage the<\/span>\u00a0Asia Pacific region<\/span>\u00a0to consider<\/span>\u00a0proper urban planning<\/span>\u00a0and design<\/span>, along with<\/span>\u00a0the impact of population density, inadequate housing, food<\/span>\u00a0security and technology on the population.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Singapore, South Korea and China have already started taking advantage of big data, robots and drones to monitor the outbreak, disinfect medical facilities and deliv<\/span>er supplies. These technologies may soon become a tool<\/span>\u00a0for cities to identify potential issues for faster response.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Diseases have shaped cities in the past. The cholera outbreaks in\u00a0<\/span>London in\u00a0<\/span>the 18<\/span>00s have led to the\u00a0<\/span>establishment\u00a0<\/span>of new zoning\u00a0<\/span>regulations\u00a0<\/span>to prohibit overcrowding<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>s well as<\/span>\u00a0the development of better plumbing and sewer systems.<\/span>\u00a0The tuberculosis epidemic in N<\/span>ew York in the early 20<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0century\u00a0<\/span>have improved housing regulations and public transit systems.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The SARS outbreak in\u00a0<\/span>China<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>elsewhe<\/span>re in 2003\u00a0<\/span>has forced Singapore to improve their medical infrastructure and design systems to map the disease.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, most of these historical changes to city planning focus on specific diseases, without even con<\/span>sidering what the future can hold.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he professor of global urban politics in the School of Design at the University of Melbourne<\/span>\u00a0Michele Acuto<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>said that\u00a0<\/span>the future\u00a0<\/span>changes that we should make\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>prepare for future pandemics\u00a0<\/span>should have climate change and sustainability in mind.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u00a0<\/span>should\u00a0<\/span><\/i>change \u2014 the decentralization of services, better managing of supplies, nets of smaller entities in food delivery, for instance<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d Michele told the\u00a0<\/span>City Lab<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cModern planning and civil engineering were born out of the mid-19th century development of sanitation in response to the spread of malaria and cholera in cities. Digital infrastructure might be the sanitation of our time,\u201d she\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>d<\/span>ded<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand,\u00a0<\/span>David Barnes, a historian at the University of Pennsylvania who studies epidemics, s<\/span>uggest<\/span>ed that we<\/span>\u00a0focus on making people healthier\u00a0<\/span>to increase<\/span>\u00a0their immunity<\/span>\u00a0to potential viruses<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Through urban planning and design, cities should <\/span>prioritise<\/span>\u00a0developing walkable\u00a0<\/span>neighbourhoods<\/span>, playgrounds<\/span> and bicycle lanes to make it more convenient for residents to exercise and provide ways for them to lower the psychological and physiological stress. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot that city planning can do to make people healthier, and it\u2019s mostly on the side of immunity,\u201d Barnes argued.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for o<\/span>ther crucial aspects that need to be considered when urban planning<\/span>, these\u00a0<\/span>cities must be able\u00a0<\/span>to provide<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>jobs and services<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0walkable\u00a0<\/span>neighbourhoods<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0make sure<\/span>\u00a0residents<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have stable housing in case of an\u00a0<\/span>outbreak<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>must have<\/span>\u00a0enough hospitals in the are<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0to cater to their medical needs<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the COVID-19 pandemic <\/span>continue to devastate\u00a0<\/span>countries across the globe, we\u00a0<\/span>should\u00a0<\/span>no longer<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>consider urban planning and design as a mere option, but as a necessity to improve the <\/span>urban qual<\/span>ity<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span> life and minimise the impact of future pandemics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
