Summarecon Group founder turned Jakarta swampland into a thriving township, pioneering a model for integrated urban development replicated across the nation<\/p>\n

Soetjipto Nagaria, founder of Summarecon Group, took the stage during the 11th PropertyGuru Indonesia Property Awards gala on Friday to receive the programme\u2019s inaugural Life Achievement Award.<\/p>\n

The accolade, presented in ceremonies at The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place, celebrated the seasoned developer for five decades of contributions to Indonesia’s property sector.<\/p>\n

Nagaria, who turns 85 in December, grew Summarecon Group from a single project into a national portfolio that today includes nine integrated township developments and five shopping malls, stretching from Jabodetabek to Makassar.<\/p>\n

He began his career developing luxury housing for expatriates before establishing Summarecon in 1975. His first and most iconic project, Kelapa Gading Permai, now known as Summarecon Kelapa Gading, validated a once-radical approach: Where others saw only swampland in North Jakarta, Nagaria saw a future metropolis.<\/p>\n

With his townships and integrated urban developments, he introduced a major industry breakthrough: the strategic integration of residential and commercial spaces. By strategically placing commercial areas along main roads with housing nestled behind them, he pioneered a model for creating self-sufficient neighborhoods. This innovative template continues to be emulated and refined by developers across Indonesia.<\/p>\n

A graduate of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) with a degree in chemical engineering, Nagaria has shown a lasting commitment to literacy and education, as shown in his efforts to establish the Pahoa Integrated Schools in 2008 and Pradita University in 2017. A prominent supporter of the Tzu Chi Buddhist Foundation, he has donated and contributed to diverse charities and causes.<\/p>\n

This Life Achievement Award adds to a history of laurels, including being honoured by Governor Sutiyoso in 2003 as a \u201cPioneer of Kelapa Gading Urban Development\u201d and receiving the Wirabakti Bumi award from Real Estate Indonesia (REI) in 2005.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was a poignant tribute to a man lauded as a master community builder, passionate educator, and dedicated philanthropist. Attendees joined in celebrating this enduring impact and offered well wishes to a genuine pioneer who has galvanised the modernisation of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
