Macau\u2019s local airport is expected to recover passenger traffic and flight movements in 2022. According to <\/span>Macau News Agency<\/span><\/a>, it is to go up to at least a third of the pre-pandemic volume. Cargo volume is also projected to recover to approximately 20 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n

The local airport reported only a passenger volume of 1.14 million in 2021. This was significantly lower than 2020\u2019s 1.17 million, and about a tenth of 2019\u2019s figures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Macau Daily Times<\/span><\/a> reported that the Macao Government Tourism Offices (MGTO) recently rolled out \u201cMy Treat for You, See You in Macao,\u201d a promotional campaign to attract more visitors. This, in partnership with Air Macau, as well as online hotel and travel booking platforms such as Fliggy.com, Ly.com, Meituan.com, Qunar.com, Trip.com, and the Zhixing App, will present special offers to mainland visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n

These offers include buy one get one deals on plane tickets and 50 percent off hotel coupons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The goal of the campaign, according to MGTO, is to convince travellers to stay for a prolonged period, which will eventually revive the local tourism industry and increase its contribution to the economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A recent survey conducted by <\/span>McKinsey<\/span><\/a> mentioned that the number of tourists went back up to 50 percent of pre-pandemic levels when the COVID-19 situation stabilized. This was when no new local outbreaks in Macau were reported and no quarantine was required for tourists from low-risk locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Approximately 1,000 tourists visited Macau every day from late September to early October 2021. This number peaked at 30,500 on a single day in late October, when it surpassed 20,000 each day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Plans to reconvert part of the Taipa Ferry Terminal into a second MIA terminal will also go underway this year. The new facility is projected to increase passenger capacity from 1.5 million to 2 million.<\/span><\/p>\n
