In the Philippines, a 2021\u00a0survey\u00a0conducted by recruitment firm Robert Walters\u00a0revealed\u00a0that\u00a033\u00a0percent of employees\u00a0favour\u00a0the hybrid work setup,\u00a0whilst 52 percent disclosed their willingness to\u00a0turn down a role that requires 100 percent office attendance,\u00a0reported\u00a0<\/span>BusinessWorld<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, Kimberlyn Lu, the managing director of Robert Walters Malaysia and the Philippines, said that the work-from-home\u00a0arrangement\u00a0does come\u00a0at\u00a0a price.\u00a0The\u00a0lack of physical interaction of employees at the office\u00a0does\u00a0have an impact on the\u00a0company culture, which is why a hybrid model that allows them to spend time with their families and co-workers is the most ideal solution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLeaders need to make sure that the outcomes are clear. They need to present the key focus areas at the start of the year\u2026 and (regularly) reiterate what the goals are and how workers can get there,\u201d she added.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u00a0also\u00a0shared that burnout\u00a0could\u00a0happen when working from home. She advised: \u201cCompanies that wish to promote sustainability and long-term productivity need to promote physical and mental well-being, speak openly about it, and (have their) leaders model it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To prevent this,\u00a0<\/span>Philstar.com<\/span><\/a>\u00a0stated\u00a0that\u00a0Sen. Francis Tolentino\u00a0has\u00a0submitted a bill\u00a0to\u00a0penalise\u00a0employers\u00a0who invade employees\u2019 \u201crest hours\u201d. This meant that meetings and assignments should not\u00a0affect\u00a0their personal time as workers transition to the work-from-home setup.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Senate Bill No. 2475\u2019s explanatory note, the Senator\u00a0said\u00a0that even though\u00a0the\u00a0remote work scheme has\u00a0enabled businesses to continue its operations amid the\u00a0oubtreak, \u201csometimes, technology and work-from-home arrangements distort the idea of work and home from the point of view of the employees.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He commented that this setup has led employees to “virtually always\u00a0(be)\u00a0at the beck and call of their employers”\u00a0even outside of regular\u00a0work hours.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this bill, \u201crest hours\u201d\u00a0are defined as\u00a0any time consumed other than the\u00a0normal work\u00a0hours rendered by the employee, which should not\u00a0be over\u00a0eight hours a day as stated\u00a0under the\u00a0labour\u00a0laws.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overtime work will only be allowed if the employee provides their written consent or\u00a0if\u00a0it is\u00a0authorised\u00a0by\u00a0labour\u00a0laws.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“While we\u00a0recognise\u00a0the benefits of work-from-home and telecommuting arrangements, they have thinned the line between work and personal space and time,” Tolentino concluded.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
