According to Free Malaysia Today (FMT)<\/a>, the man-made island next to the first Penang bridge, Pulau\u00a0Gazumbo, will be developed into a marine sanctuary by the state government.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pulau\u00a0Gazumbo, created during the construction of the bridge, is known as Middle Bank (Tebing\u00a0Tengah) because\u00a0it is the site of the largest seagrass meadow in the Straits of Melaka.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Various marine life, from shellfish such as horseshoe crab to marine algae, live on this site as it is also a feeding ground for many marine creatures.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the\u00a0state government is working to\u00a0gazette\u00a0the island\u00a0to be called\u00a0the \u201cMiddle Bank Marine Sanctuary\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He also added that\u00a0Phee Boon Poh, environment committee chairman,\u00a0has been selected to lead a team that will look into various issues, including the island\u2019s proposed gazettement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope they will complete their first phase of work as soon as possible for us to make a further announcement on the marine sanctuary,\u201d Chow said at the launch of a website for \u201cPenang 2030 Phase 2: Accelerating Penang 2030\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aileen Tan, director at Universiti Sains Malaysia\u2019s Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (Cemacs), said the marine sanctuary was a good proposal\u00a0for conserving the environment and creating a green lung for George Town.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis marine sanctuary can become an education and awareness hub for the state government,\u201d Tan said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expert support to the state government\u00a0to gazette\u00a0the island will\u00a0also be provided by\u00a0Cemacs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
