As the ongoing pandemic continues to impact Taiwan\u2019s hotel industry, a Taiwan tourism group has called upon the government to urgently address this situation and moderately relax border restrictions, reported Taiwan News<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lulu Chuang, chairwoman of\u00a0Leofoo\u00a0Tourism Group, urged the government in a recent interview to\u00a0adopt the style of\u00a0the UK and US in loosening border controls as\u00a0vaccination\u00a0rates reach certain levels.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taipei greatly depends on international visitors, so the city has been heavily impacted, said Chuang.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She shared that occupancy rates at the Courtyard by Marriott Taipei in\u00a0Nangang\u00a0District\u00a0have\u00a0been unstable, seeing 10-20 percent\u00a0fluctuations\u00a0during the peak of the pandemic.\u00a0On the other hand,\u00a0Leofoo\u00a0Village Theme Park had to close from May to July to comply with government regulations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLast year, we made a prompt decision to convert the\u00a0Leofoo\u00a0Hotel and\u00a0Leofoo\u00a0Residences into quarantine hotels\u201d in order to maintain stable sources of guests and earnings, Chuang said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Courtyard by Marriott Taipei had also recently transformed into a quarantine hotel to stay afloat.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTaiwan should not lock the country in order to pursue zero confirmed cases,\u201d she noted.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of only handing out stimulus vouchers as Taiwan\u2019s vaccination rates climb, the government should also plan on relaxing border restrictions to a certain extent,\u00a0to attract foreign visitors and investments.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Case in point,\u00a0the UK has allowed\u00a0travellers\u00a0from low-risk countries with negative PCR test results to enter since July when its two-dose vaccination rate reached 49 percent. Australia\u00a0has shortened the required quarantine time for arriving\u00a0travellers\u00a0to seven\u00a0days,\u00a0while\u00a0neighbouring\u00a0countries like Singapore, Thailand, and South Korea have all\u00a0implemented\u00a0different degrees of border relaxation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hsiao Ching-tien, director of the Taiwan Tourist Hotel Association, mentioned in a separate interview that the vaccination rate is key to border reopening. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taiwan has achieved a 60 percent first-dose vaccination rate and a 20 percent second-dose rate, which is aimed to be brought up to 60 percent by the end of 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n
