Rapid urbanisation, growing population, and booming economy of Vietnam are just some of the factors that have caused a strain on its natural resources. With the looming threat of climate change, the country\u2019s immense coastline makes it susceptible to the effects and the rising sea levels.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fortunately, Vietnam’s government has become well aware of the repercussions and understands the importance of transforming its urban cities to be smarter and more sustainable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Buildings contribute\u00a0to climate change<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Buildings, from planning to construction to user-stage,\u00a0utilise\u00a0vast amounts of resources. In Vietnam, buildings\u00a0consume half of the country\u2019s raw materials, 30 to 40 percent of its energy production, a quarter of its wood harvest, and 17 percent of its freshwater.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The government\u2019s decision to build green cities is crucial\u00a0to\u00a0ease up human activities that cause harm to the environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on the\u00a0October 2019\u00a0data published by\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>International Finance Corporation\u00a0(IFC),<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0country\u00a0has\u00a0130 projects certified by the\u00a0leading\u00a0green building certification systems, such as\u00a0EDGE by\u00a0the IFC,\u00a0LEED by the US Green Building\u00a0Council,\u00a0and LOTUS by the Vietnam Green Building Council.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prioritising\u00a0green cities<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus far, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, and 27 other cities have taken strides to become green. To support them, the government has introduced a smart city strategy, an <\/span>urban green growth development plan,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0urban green growth indicators,\u00a0and the following five pillars:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Sustainable\u00a0quality;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Reducing energy consumption\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Saving\u00a0resources;\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Health and safety; and\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Reducing environmental impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Investment opportunities in green\u00a0infrastructure<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Going green\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0only\u00a0benefit\u00a0the environment, but it can also serve as a great investment for businesses. In fact, a report by the\u00a0<\/span>Green Infrastructure Investment Opportunities<\/span><\/a>\u00a0uncovered\u00a0that green buildings\u00a0exhibit\u00a0huge investment potentials, adding\u00a0approximately USD100\u00a0trillion globally\u00a0between 2019 to 2030.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Alexander Feldman, the president and chief executive officer of the US-ASEAN Business Council, said: \u201cAs ASEAN grows and steadily fulfils its economic potential,\u00a0opportunities exist across a wide range of industries. For example,\u00a0ASEAN has over USD2\u00a0trillion worth of infrastructure investment\u00a0opportunities \u2013 not just traditional ports, roads, and bridges, but<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>support in ICT, education, agriculture, and healthcare.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Moreover, the consumers’ demand to go green has become the primary driver of green infrastructure in the country, which bodes well for investors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Leading developers leading the change<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The past decade has seen a rise in the popularity of buildings embracing the green concept. Leading property developers in the country have started to launch several eco-themed residential developments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Among the\u00a0aforementioned\u00a0climate\u00a0heroes\u00a0include the\u00a0<\/span>PropertyGuru Vietnam Property Awards<\/span><\/a> winners: Viet Nam Singapore Industrial Park & Township Development Joint Stock Company (VSIP JSC), VSIP-Sembcorp Gateway Development Co., Ltd., KN Cam Ranh Company Limited, Phuc Khang Corporation, Gamuda Land, Cat Tuong Real Estate Group Joint Stock Company, and Ecopark Corporation Joint Stock Company.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Another mainstay at the Awards stage is Singapore\u2019s Capitaland Group who developed Feliz En Vista, a 35-storey skyscraper designed to reduce the HVAC systems\u2019 energy usage by half and the lighting usage by 70 percent.<\/span> This means that the development can conserve electricity roughly 4800 megawatts per hour, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 3,900 tonnes, and save from energy costs of around USD600,000 per year. The sustainable solutions implemented raised the building cost by two percent with an approximate payback period of 1.5 years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Suffice to say, green buildings are a profitable venture for investors, seeing as this type of infrastructure is\u00a0globally\u00a0encouraged\u00a0to become a norm in the future.\u00a0Yet to effectively house Vietnam\u2019s growing urban population,\u00a0affordable, green buildings should be at the core\u00a0of construction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
