The Philippines\u2019 rich history\u00a0<\/span>and vast influences from other nations\u00a0<\/span>ha<\/span>ve<\/span>\u00a0paved the way for the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>contemporary designs of\u00a0<\/span>today<\/span><\/p>\n

With approximately\u00a07,640 islands \u2013 2,000 of which\u00a0remain\u00a0uninhabited, says\u00a0<\/span>National Geographic<\/span><\/a> \u2013 the Philippine archipelago has immense space and natural resources available for building homes, which the ancestral tribes took advantage of in building the first known Filipino home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Several centuries later, Spain (1565-1898) and the United States (1898-1946) colonised the country, indelibly rewriting the history, culture, and beliefs of the Filipino people. This influence is evident in religion, language, politics, and of course architecture, as seen in landmarks, heritage sites, and houses throughout the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, despite the evolution\u00a0of Filipino homes\u00a0from 100 years ago,\u00a0several communities still choose to replicate\u00a0the\u00a0style of\u00a0century-old\u00a0homes\u00a0today\u00a0— and the most favoured\u00a0and well-known globally among the designs\u00a0is\u00a0the\u00a0b<\/span>ahay\u00a0kubo.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When you think of a\u00a0traditional\u00a0Filipino home, the\u00a0<\/span>bahay\u00a0kubo<\/span><\/i> usually comes to mind. According to <\/span>Lamudi<\/span><\/a>, many Filipino citizens\u00a0in the rural communities\u00a0still adopt this style\u00a0because of its simple design,\u00a0ease of execution, and readily available and affordable native materials, such as\u00a0<\/span>nipa\u00a0<\/span><\/i>and bamboo.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the American\u00a0occupation,\u00a0architect and heritage advocate Paulo\u00a0Alcazaren\u00a0said in his column\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span>The Philippine Star<\/span><\/a> that \u201cFilipinos were encouraged to build homes with more Western materials and with spatial patterns that partitioned spaces.\u201d This is why in the 1930s, the typical\u00a0<\/span>bahay\u00a0kubo<\/span><\/i> can be seen with higher ceilings and bigger living rooms. Though the roof was still made of thatched <\/span>nipa<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and the walls of woven\u00a0<\/span>sawali\u00a0<\/span><\/i>or bamboo strips, the interiors now feature sturdy bentwood furniture and accessories made of <\/span>rattan<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Spanish colonial era brought about stone and masonry construction in the Philippines, leading to the development of infrastructures, such as roads and bridges, and paving the way for another traditional Filipino home, the <\/span>bahay\u00a0na\u00a0bato<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As its name suggests, this typical two-storey home is made of huge cut stone or brick walls on the ground floor and hardwood on the upper level. <\/span>Tatler\u00a0Philippines<\/span><\/a> describes this Antillean style of architecture as a \u201cstately Filipino house during the Spanish Colonial period\u201d built for the upper echelon, adding that this design is ideal for the Philippine climate fraught with natural disasters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the style is unique from one island to another. The homes in Manila and Luzon is distinct from that of the ancestral homes in Visayas, for instance. In Negros Occidental, Silay City is referred to as the \u201cParis of Negros\u201d because of its magnificent, century-old Art Deco heritage homes and structures. Iloilo City also has its fair share of mansions, including the classic colonial architecture of Molo Mansion with its distinctive high ceilings, exquisite arches, and ornate carvings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tsalet\u00a0(Chalet)<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the United States stepped in,\u00a0they began to highlight the concept of sanitation \u2013 and so laid the foundation for the\u00a0<\/span>cubeta<\/span><\/i>\u00a0or the use of toilet\u00a0through a pail conservancy system.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On her blog\u00a0<\/span>Filipina Architect<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Gloryrose\u00a0Dy\u00a0Metilla\u00a0said that in a\u00a0<\/span>tsalet\u00a0<\/span><\/i>home, \u201cthe bathroom and kitchen [is now] situated inside the house and had modern features such as the flush system and modern shower.\u201d Private garages to secure vehicles were first introduced in this type of home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The early days of urban planning also emerged with this concept, via a neighbourhood design called a\u00a0<\/span>sanitary\u00a0barrio<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bungalow<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Major architectural developments occurred during the American regime, including the origin of the most common type of house in the country, the\u00a0<\/span>bungalow<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>Tokyo Grand Renovation<\/span><\/a> said these homes are usually low-rise, made of concrete walls and galvanised iron roof, and have a yard, garden, and garage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bungalows\u00a0<\/span><\/i>are often found in urban areas since these are easier to construct and cost much less compared to a multi-storey house.\u00a0 This design is also perfect for the elderly because it is small, easy to maintain, and don\u2019t have flights of stairs. Since these are low to the ground, bungalows<\/em> offer more privacy to the residents who can use trees and fences to block the windows.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Townhouse<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Townhouses are also fairly common in the Philippines. These have been coined as \u201cstarter homes\u201d for new families because of the general cost of building and maintenance, as well as the affordability of the lot area. Townhouses suit those who prefer not to live in a condominium and aren\u2019t ready to invest in a permanent house and lot.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Condominiums<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Condominiums have taken over major cities not only in the Philippines, but also across the globe because of its price range and strategic location in city centres. It offers utmost convenience to residents, seeing as they will have direct access to gyms and recreational areas and they won’t have to worry about maintaining yards and garages. These types of homes come with its own building security, landscapers, repairmen, housekeepers, and other servicemen. A maintenance fee is normally required from owners to help keep the building in good condition.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As times change and as our needs evolve, our definition of a modern home in the coming years will be different, even without the influences from other cultures. So far, we are seeing a growing number of property buyers around the globe interested in moving to fully automated, sustainable homes \u2013 and with the awareness growing in the Philippines and the increasing number of sustainable buildings being constructed by the PropertyGuru Philippines Property Awards<\/a>‘<\/span> winning developers, this is a more likely scenario in the foreseeable future.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
