As reported by Macau Daily Times<\/a>, the Galaxy International Convention Center (GICC),<\/span>\u00a0constructed to stimulate the government\u2019s \u201cTourism + MICE\u201d incentive, is expected to launch in the second half of 2021 due to construction de<\/span>lays from the pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joey\u00a0<\/span>Pather<\/span>, senior vice president of MICE operations and sales for the group\u2019s new resort, said, \u201cwe are talking about how MICE can be a big focus area [for Macau\u2019s tourism] this year. We are not just seeing MICE as MICE, but what MICE does for the whole business<\/span> [world].\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MICE<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>represents<\/span> Macao\u2019s convention and exhibition industry, the city\u2019s fastest-growing emerging sectors in recent years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lei Wai Nong, Secretary for Economy and Finance, first announced in November 2020 that the government would strive for the \u201cTourism+\u201d\u00a0<\/span>idea\u00a0<\/span>in 2021.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cTourism+\u201d is a strategic focus aimed to merge the tourism industry with other sectors such as\u00a0<\/span>MICE, as well as culture, e-commerce, and sports, in hopes to boost Macau\u2019s tourism and economy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), confirm<\/span>ed at an annual briefing that Tourism+ cross-sector integration would be one of MGTO\u2019s top five work goals in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

Galaxy Entertainment Group announced that the GICC was initially bound to open in H1 2021, but the unexpected pandemic delayed<\/span>\u00a0construction progress by another half-year.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pather<\/span>\u00a0mentioned, \u201cobviously, we had a few delays with COVID-19 in terms of construction, but we made up a lot of time.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The GICC is estimated to be an HKD9 billion (USD1.1 billion) project, featuring<\/span> facilities, such as a 650-seat auditorium, 4,000 square\u00a0<\/span>metre<\/span> conference\u00a0hall, and a vast 10,000-metre<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>pillar-less<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>exhibition<\/span>\u00a0space<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As stated by the \u2018International Meetings Market 2019 Report\u2019 by the International Congress\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0Convention Association (ICCA), Macau shot up\u00a0<\/span>to 48<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0highest-ranked city for the number of meetings held in 2019. In the Asia Pacific region, Macau was ranked 12<\/span>th<\/span>, up 5 places year-on-year.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Hong Kong still held a significant lead, ranking 22<\/span>nd<\/span>\u00a0globally for MICE events and 7<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0in the Asia Pacific region.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pather<\/span>\u00a0believes that the addition of GICC to Macau\u2019s MICE events is a world-class facility that \u201cwill definitely give Hong Kong a run for the venue.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
