On 28 February, Microsoft announced that they will establish the company\u2019s first data cent<\/span>re<\/span>\u00a0region in Indonesia, possibly joining<\/span>\u00a0its counterparts, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud, in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>growingly\u00a0<\/span>competitive<\/span>\u00a0market of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Southeast Asia<\/span>, reported Channel Asia<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Joko Widodo, president of Indonesia, plans are already in place as the country has placed \u201csimple\u00a0<\/span>regulation<\/span>\u201d to facilitate the setup. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMicrosoft wants to invest immediately in Indonesia,\u201d said Widodo during the DevCon – Digital Economy Summit 2020. \u201c<\/span>So<\/span> within a week, we will decide a new, simple regulation to support the investment.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Microsoft event<\/span>\u00a0hosted over 2,500 developers, entrepreneurs, and start-ups, presenting the company\u2019s strategy for cloud success in Southeast Asia.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the past two decades, ResearchAndMarkets<\/span>\u2019 report stated that \u201cthe Indonesian data <\/span>centre<\/span> market has experienced significant growth.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“In particular, growth has been very strong over the past few years, as Indonesia seeks to bridge the gap with its more advanced neighbours such as Singapore and Malaysia,” the report said.<\/p>\n

“However, lack of government incentives and programs to support the growth of data centres in the country has seen the adoption of data centre services at a slower organic pace compared to some neighbouring countries.”<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, research findings indicate that the market is beginning to obtain strong momentum. The report adds that Indonesia is drawing in investments from <\/span>cloud giants like Google, A<\/span>mazon<\/span>, and A<\/span>libaba<\/span>, indicating<\/span>\u00a0the nation\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>fascination\u00a0<\/span>as an alternative to Singapore for cloud and data <\/span>centre<\/span>\u00a0services.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLarge international data\u00a0<\/span>centre<\/span>\u00a0specialists and international content and cloud providers have yet to enter Indonesia to the same extent seen in more advanced markets such as Singapore and Hong Kong, however, their interest in the Indonesian market is now increasing.<\/span> “<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCompared to more mature\u00a0<\/span>neighbouring<\/span> markets such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan where land for new builds is scarce and expensive to acquire, in comparison Indonesia has better availability of land at cheaper prices.
