Malaysian property mogul Dato’ Seri Abd Wahab Maskan, group chief operating officer of Sime Darby Group, has been named the very first Real Estate Personality of the Year at the inaugural South East Asia Property Awards (Malaysia).
With his business prowess and solid track record in property development, Wahab, who has been managing director of Sime Darby Property Berhad since June 2011, is the top choice for this honour of the editors of Property Report magazine, the leading industry publication from Ensign Media, organisers of the SEAPA (Malaysia) 2014.
Wahab’s landmark township projects in Malaysia include Subang Jaya, Bandar Kinrara, Nilai Impian, Bukit Jelutong, City of Elmina, Bandar Universiti Pagoh, Bandar Universiti Serinia City, Bandar Ainsdale, Bandar Bukit Raja and the 37,000-acre Sime Darby Vision Valley (SDVV) master plan. Other successful integrated developments that he spearheaded are BB Plaza, Dayabumi and Oasis Ara Damansara.
“To be recognised this way makes me feel honoured and humbled. I will accept this award on behalf of friends and colleagues who have been supportive of my ideas and initiatives delivered all these years, especially the Sime Darby Property team,” he said.
The Malaysian real estate visionary is a firm believer in building affordable housing. As top executive of Sime Darby Property, he has created some 37,000 low-cost housing options and plans an additional 20,000 in the next six years.
“Evergreen topics of affordable housing, products and services remain highly relevant, especially in a more challenging socio-economic dynamic that puts pressure on cost and delivery,” said Wahab, who has an estimated property portfolio of MYR73 billion (USD23.12 billion) that will be completed in the next decade.
He added: “Southeast Asia is a vibrant, emerging market, offering tremendous prospects. Having gone through the process of managing change vis-à-vis the property industry in Malaysia, parts of South East Asia, as well as overseas, Sime Darby Property and I are well positioned to grow with the market expectations.”
A holder of a Bachelor of Science in Estate Management from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, Wahab is also a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (England & United Kingdom), as well as of the Royal Institution of Surveyors (Malaysia) (RISM), the Incorporated Society of Planters and the Malaysian Institute of Management.
Wahab’s award will be given out at the exclusive gala dinner and presentation ceremony on Tuesday, 26 August, at the Westin Kuala Lumpur.
